本片以紀實風格再現了1938年到1945年抗日聯軍第六軍被服廠女兵，傷兵醫院傷兵組成的留守團在主力部隊西征后堅持在老游擊區牽制敵人主力，于重重圍剿中突圍，進入蘇聯整訓，整編為抗聯第88教導旅打回東北的真實故事。 影片透過12歲女戰士李童的視角，塑造了耿團長、裴大姐、白連長、金玉希、李亦奇等一批普通抗聯男女戰士在突圍中拼死互相保護，犧牲、被俘、最終生還的殘酷歷程。 本片改編自最后一個離世的抗聯女戰士李敏撰寫的回憶錄。 這是第一次用電影方式講述了抗聯后期從突圍到整編為教導旅再到打回東北的全過程。
