影片改編自英國后現代主義文學作家朱利安;巴恩斯（Julian暫無內容Barnes；1946年1月19日~）發表于1980年的同名長篇小說處女作（公認為《倫敦郊區》）。片名Metroland有;（倫敦）地鐵暫無內容和;（倫敦）郊區暫無內容的詞義雙解，本片片名與人們熟知的小說原作《倫敦郊區》不同的是，它旨在影射倫敦地鐵不斷向郊區擴張所造成的郊區居民的意識轉變。20世紀70年代。克里斯Chris（克里斯蒂安貝爾飾）的朋友托尼Toni（李暫無內容羅斯飾）在消失了十年后突然又出現了，為這平靜的倫敦郊區小鎮和克里斯帶來了變化，克里斯受了托尼的影響和誘惑，接觸性、毒品及搖滾樂，他們無憂的生活對克里斯的婚姻造成了沖擊。克里斯雖然忘不了他與巴黎美女阿妮克Annick（埃爾莎暫無內容齊爾貝斯坦飾）的狂愛時刻，但他還是開始存疑自身的價值、生活方式和與妻子瑪麗昂Marion（埃米莉暫無內容沃森飾）之間的關系。最后，克里斯必須選擇是要過不負責任的生活來繼續享受玩樂，還是面對嚴酷的現實回到妻子瑪麗昂身邊......
