影片改編自享譽世界的比利時法語偵探小說家喬治 西默農（Georges Simenon，1903年12月12日~1989年9月4日）發表于1933年的偵探小說《伊爾先生的訂婚儀式》（Les Fian ccedil;ailles de M. Hire）。 老裁縫伊爾先生Monsieur Hire（米歇爾勃朗飾）平日沉默寡言，孤獨一人住在公寓里，一日，22歲的鄰居姑娘皮埃蕾特 布儒瓦Pierrette Bourgeois（米蕾葉貝爾東飾）被人殘殺于灌木叢中，平素行為古怪的老單身漢伊爾成了眾人眼中的疑兇，而真正的兇手卻是一個叫埃米爾 Emile（呂克 蒂利耶飾）的青年。伊爾先生知道這一事實，但他卻沒有揭發埃米爾，也沒做任何的辨解，因為，他深愛著埃米爾的女友阿麗斯Alice（桑德琳娜博奈爾飾），害怕埃米爾的兇殺案會把她牽連進去。而當兇殺案真相大白時，伊爾先生用盡辦法準備與阿麗斯雙雙逃走，但阿麗斯為解救埃米爾卻嫁禍給伊爾。
