 2008年金融危機下，美國內華達州昂皮爾小鎮的重要經濟支柱石膏廠倒閉，人去鎮空，這里的郵政編碼也被取消。丈夫去世后，幾乎在在昂皮爾小鎮度過了一生的弗恩（弗蘭西斯·麥克多蒙德飾）無力獨撐生活。為了將生活成本壓到最低，她將簡陋的家當搬上了改裝后的廂式貨車，開始了一邊打工、一邊西行的公路生活。她在亞馬遜流水線上、在游樂園的咖啡廳里、在國家森林公園做臨時工。一路上，她和許多廂式貨車寄居者相遇、相識，彼此幫助，并締結了友誼。

　　敬太（杉田雷麟 飾）的弟弟日向很久之前，在山中失蹤。敬太一直還在尋找弟弟。一天，他突然收到母親寄來的一盤舊錄像帶，里面是弟弟失蹤瞬間的錄像。　　敬太擅長通靈的室友（平井亞門 飾）從錄像帶中感受到了不祥的氣氛，并勸敬太不要過多地介入其中。 隨后，他倆與一直報道此事的記者 美琴（森田想 飾）共同前往了弟弟失蹤的那座山。
